What is a virtual machine?

A virtual machine (VM) is  a copy of a  machine within that machine. Unlike an emulator, a virtual machine shares the architecture with the host, which results in increased performance, but also different fields of application.

The definition is recursive, so the host itself can be a virtual machine (you can test this by installing the VMM inside a VM).

VMM

A virtual machine monitor (VMM) is the application which runs on the host to provide virtualisation. The VMM is also known as hypervisor, often, but not exclusively, in the context of paravirtualisation.
